The Brothers Grimm loved a good story, one with magic and danger one with royalty and rogues. Such stories made up of lands that don’t exist in the real world and people we can only imagine have been written and read by people all across the world. Fairytales create an escape for mostly children and even help them face their fears. Some authors that write these stories take reality and apply it to their tales such as, the Grimm brothers. Most of their stories had a reputation for fear because they wrote about what was happening around them, but soon after they changed the style of their tales to appeal to a new audience seeking material for the nursery.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were two brothers who grew up in Germany; they lived comfortably as children, but struggled to get by the rest of their lives. They wrote a collection of fairy tales whose at first story had a reputation for violence until the need to satisfy a new audience seeking material for the nursery. They wrote these stories to save the endangered oral tradition of Germany; they took root with the public in 1812. At the age of 13 and 12 the brothers were sent to an upper crest high school where they met the wise man who changed their lives. Their father died in 1796 and their mother died in 1808, after their mother died the family struggled money was scarce, they lived off of one meal a day, Wilhelm became sickly, and Jacob was left to take care of the whole family. Between the both of them, they published 35 books, their last project was the German Dictionary neither brother lived to finish it. (Living in the world; Cultural Themes For Writers)

The Grimm brothers made it to where their stories related to everyone in some way. In the story the Lazy Spinner; there was a man that had a wife that was very lazy. He needed lots of help around the village, but for everything he needed help with she made an excuse or made him feel bad. There was a certain item she said she could not operate the spinning machine without. When her husband went out to go get it, she came up with a plan to make him feel bad. The next step after spinning was boiling, but she didn’t want to do that either, so she took another material that wasn’t supposed to be boiled and put it in the pot so by the time her husband got up to check he thought he thought he messed everything up and he ended up feeling bad and taking the blame when everything was really her fault. (Brothers Grimm)

I know a lot of people that can relate to this story including myself. In one particular situation, my mother told me to clean the bathroom, but I didn’t want to. The day came and the bathroom still hadn’t been cleaned, instead of taking the blame I decided to point the finger at my brother. In the end my brother got in trouble and felt bad because he thought he didn’t do what he was suppose to do.

Fairytales are made up or considered make believe, but everyone connects to them in a certain way. The author wants to relate the stories being told to real life, but they create a child like version for younger readers to understand. In a sense fairy tales are censored versions of the real world. The Grimm brothers like many other authors did this in their stories without losing the innocence of children.
